What is The mission of the Howard University Alumni Club of Prince Georges County?

The mission is to increase and enrich the Howard University and Prince George’s communities we serve by creating programmatic and financial success. We promote and maintain alumni interest in the support of Howard University as an institution of academic excellence, and create and maintain an environment that encourages alumni participation in PG County, Maryland through volunteerism, serving, and financial support of HU and the Prince Georges County community.

Why was the Scholarship Fund Created?

The scholarship fund was created on behalf of the Howard University Alumni Club of Prince Georges County to enhance educational opportunities for high school seniors who are residents of Prince Georges County, Maryland and plan to attend Howard University.

The Scope of The Scholarship Fund

The overarching concept of the scholarship fund is to provide a scholarship on behalf of the Howard University Alumni Club of Prince George’s County to enhance educational opportunities for high school seniors who are residents of Prince George’s County, Maryland and that plan to attend Howard University.

To Be Eligible For The Prince George’s County Resident Scholarship Applicants Must:

  • Reside in the DMV area
  • Be a graduating high school senior from a school (or home-based) in the Prince George’s County, MD area during the application school year
  • Received acceptance into Howard University with the intent to attend as a full-time student
  • Complete and pass all necessary standardized tests for graduation
  • Be a US citizen, US national, or US permanent resident
  • Compete all necessary application requirements (criteria will be provided)
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or greater on a 4.0 scale as verified by an official high school transcript or by an accompanying certification from an appropriate school official (i.e., School Registrar or Guidance Counselor)
  • Provide one letter of recommendation
  • Submit a 450 minimum word essay on 1 of the 4 following topics
    • What do you know about Howard University and why are you interested in attending?
    • What major or program are you interested in and how will this major help you achieve your academic or professional goals?
    • What is your greatest accomplishment or disappointment and describe how it changed your life?
    • Howard University has successful alum in various careers across the world. Name notable alum of Howard University and discuss how their legacy is parallel to your own personal journey.
  • Be able to provide documentation of acceptance into Howard University

The Award and Process

For 2025, there will be three scholarship awards: one $5,000, one $3,000 and one $2000. The awards will be applied to either the 1st or 2nd semesters (NOT BOTH) of undergraduate study.  All application packets will be evaluated by an independent selection panel established by the Howard University Alumni Club of Prince George’s County.  The top 10 submissions will be required to interview with the scholarship committee for final selection.  The selected recipients will be notified by late July/early August of the application year. Scholarship awards are paid directly to the college or university where the recipient will be attending and may only be applied toward tuition, books, room and board, meal tickets, and other fees.  Applications and supporting documentation are considered confidential and are reviewed only by the HUAC-PGC Scholarship Committee.  Depending on timing and/or venue availability, the recipients will be honored either in person or virtually at a date to be determined in the application year.
